Introduction

Overview

Preparing students for direct entry to Year 1 of an undergraduate degree in subjects including Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at The University of Manchester.

Key information

  • Practise academic writing skills, particularly relating to laboratory reports.
  • Make use of fully equipped university science labs.
  • Visit the nine schools within the University faculty to meet with academic staff and gain an insight into different degree programmes.
  • Progress to a degree offering an industrial placement option.

25 hours per week (20 hours per week during Term 1)

Class duration

Typically held Monday to Friday between 08.00 - 19.00 excluding bank holidays. However, there may be instances where classes need to be held outside these times due to unforeseen circumstances.

Completion of 12 years of schooling (or local equivalent to meet the same standard) with good grades.

English language entry requirements

3 Terms: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing) or equivalent.
Additional information

If you have achieved the minimum IELTS score overall but do not have the required score in writing for direct entry, you will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The module prepares you for independent study through developing your research skills and abilities. The aim of this module is to:

  • introduce you to the academic culture of UK higher education
  • provide you with the intellectual development necessary for undergraduate study in the UK
  • help support key study skills for successful undergraduate study

The module introduces reading techniques for academic study and the structure and function of academic writing. You will cover:

  • English writing skills
  • academic discussions
  • working in groups and presenting ideas
  • time management
  • research and lecture notes

This module will teach you various ICT skills, including:

  • word processing and spreadsheets
  • databases
  • internet, email and VLE software

This module is compulsory, but not credit-bearing.

This module takes an evolutionary approach to biology, considering:

  • the different levels of organisation in living systems
  • the study of life processes and similarities between living things

This module builds on the fundamental principles of general chemistry, including:

  • concepts of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry
  • the social, environmental, economic and technological impact of chemistry on the community
