International Foundation in Health, Medical and Life Sciences

Overview

The International Foundation Year is designed for international students who would like to study an undergraduate degree at Cardiff University. If you don't have the grades required for direct entry, you need to practise your English, or you just want a softer start to your university experience, it could be a great choice for you.

Key information

Enhance your scientific knowledge and develop transferrable skills for a wide choice of health industries, with our pathway programmes expertly designed for international students. The International Foundation Year prepares you for university with English language and study skills practice, as well as subject-specific teaching. When you complete the programme, you will progress to the first year of your undergraduate degree. This pathway allows you to progress to degrees in subjects including biochemistry, dental surgery, and medicine. You choose a route depending on which undergraduate degree you plan to study. There are two routes: Health, Medicine and Life Sciences and Psychology. Which route you choose impacts the modules you will study.

Please note that places on the programme with the degree aim of Optometry, Dental Surgery, Medicine, Medical Pharmacology and Pharmacy are limited and you are advised to apply and confirm your place as soon as possible as well as meet other conditions of your offer. A selection process is in place for students aiming to study Dental Surgery and Medicine – find out more here. In order to progress to Optometry, Medical Pharmacology or Pharmacy degree aims, as well as meeting module grades, students will also need to undergo an interview, a DBS check and an Occupational Health check.

  • With a Cardiff University degree, you’ll be amongst the UK’s most sought-after graduates. 96% of our graduates were in employment and/or further study, due to start a new job or course, or doing other activities, such as travelling (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2019/20).
  • As an undergraduate, you’ll work alongside international scholars at the forefront of their subject, studying in a vibrant, research-intensive environment. You’ll be given a flavour of the research activities going on within your subject and will have the opportunity to take part in learning activities influenced by staff research interests. For example, optional modules based on staff research interest may be offered and case studies or experiments used in class may derive from live research projects.
  • You’ll also have the chance to contribute to a research project through paid work experience as part of our on-campus internship opportunities.
